Equine Courses

"I aim to  to help people have the relationship with their horses that they dream of."

Emma

Build-A-Horse

Course Description
This course is designed for horse owners, riders, and trainers who want to gain a deeper understanding of equine anatomy and biomechanics. By learning how a horse's body is structured and how it moves, you will be able to design a training program that effectively and safely builds muscle, improves performance, and promotes a long, healthy career for your horse.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the major muscle groups of the horse.

  • Understand the basic principles of equine biomechanics and correct movement.

  • Evaluate a horse's conformation, posture and current muscle development.

  • Select and apply exercises to target specific muscle groups.

  • Design a structured, progressive training plan for building strength and fitness.

  • Recognise signs of muscle soreness, fatigue, or incorrect training.

Module 1

This module provides a foundational understanding of the horse's musculoskeletal system.

  • Key Topics:

    • Major Muscle Groups: Identification and function of the Chain Muscles.

    • Understanding Conformation: How skeletal structure influences a horse's movement and potential for muscle development.

Module 2

Module 3

In this module, we will talk through the steps to strengthen your horse and what steps to take.

  • Key Topics:

    • The Steps to Strengthening: Communication, Proprioception, Posture and Strengthening.

    • Targeted Exercises: Put what you learned in Modules 1 and 2 to choose what exercise to do.

In this module, we will examine how the horse’s body functions as a unified unit. We will analyse and discuss how muscle engagement impacts efficiency and soundness.

  • Key Topics:

    • Understanding Posture: How posture can affect movement and muscle development.

    • Common Movement Faults: Recognising issues like hollowing the back, over-flexion, or dragging the hind legs, and what they indicate about muscle imbalance.

Module 4

This module is about practical application. We'll show you how to combine the knowledge from previous modules to create a personalised, progressive training program for your horse.

    • Key Topics:

    • Periodisation: Planning training cycles for building fitness and maintaining muscle.

    • Warm-up and Cool-down Protocols: The importance of preparing and recovering the muscles.

    • Troubleshooting: What to do when your horse is not responding to training or shows signs of fatigue.
