The Equine Mind

This course provides horse owners with a foundational understanding of the equine mind. Going into how they interact with the world, how they communicate with one another and apply this knowledge to improve handling, training, and overall horse-human relationships.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand your horse's perspective of the world through their sight, hearing, smell, feel and taste.

  • How to recognise tension and teach your horse to self-regulate.

  • Understand how to communicate and train with your horse.

  • Select and apply groundwork to strengthen your foundation skills, communication and coping method.

  • Design a structured, progressive training plan for youngster training.

  • Recognise signs bad coping methods and build your problem solving skills to counteract them.

Module 1

In this module, we will explore the world through their perspective. How they see, hear, smell, feel and taste what is around them and how we can use that in our training and relationship with them.

  • Key Topics:​

    • The Horses' Senses: Learn why it is important to understand this and how it can change the way we train them.

    • Human vs Equine: What are the big differences and how it can lead to misunderstandings.

    • How horses hold tension, how to recognise them and teach your horse to release.

Module 2

In this module, we will learn how to communicate and train with our horse!

  • Key Topics:​​

    • Pressure and Release: What does it mean? How to use it correctly. 

    • The 3 C's: Clear, Concise and Consistent.

    • The Importance of Positive Reinforcement: Does this mean treats or something else? 

Module 3

In this module, we dive into problem-solving!! Things will never always go our way, so we need to know what to do to help our horses grow to be confident horses with fantastic coping methods!

  • Key Topics:​

    • How Horses Learn: Did you know that you can teach a horse to bite, kick and buck?

    • Where to Stand: Always keep yourself safe!

    • How to Build Healthy Coping Methods: This is such an important part of horse training!
